Does a Private Browser Actually Stop Tracking?

Partly — and the gap between what it blocks and what people assume it blocks is where the harm lives. A privacy browser stops third-party cookies and fingerprinting scripts, which is the everyday tracking that quietly builds an advertising profile of you. It does nothing about the things most people actually worry about: your internet provider still sees which sites you visit, the sites themselves still know who you are once you log in, and data brokers already hold what they bought years ago. Incognito mode is narrower still — it forgets your history locally and protects you from nobody else. Beyond that, the browsers solve different problems, so there is no single “most private browser” that’s right for everyone. The best one depends on what you’re actually protecting against.

First, the honest question: what are you protecting against?

Security folks call this your “threat model.” It sounds dramatic; it just means what’s the realistic problem you’re solving? Getting specific here makes the whole choice easy, because these browsers are tuned for different problems.

You want to stop everyday tracking and ads. Advertisers follow you across sites to build a profile. This is the most common goal, and the most solvable — Brave or a lightly configured Firefox handles it well.

You want to blend in and resist fingerprinting. Beyond cookies, sites can identify your browser by its unique combination of screen size, fonts, hardware, and settings — a “fingerprint” that follows you even when you clear cookies. Fighting this well is harder and is where Mullvad Browser and Tor Browser shine.

You need genuine anonymity. You don’t want the sites you visit — or anyone watching your network — to know who or where you are. That’s a Tor Browser problem, and only Tor’s.

You just don’t want the next person at this computer seeing your history. That’s what incognito/private mode is for, and it’s fine for exactly that and nothing more.

A note on that “engine” column, because it matters more than it looks. Chromium is the open-source core that powers Chrome, Edge, Brave, and most other browsers. Gecko is Firefox’s independent engine. A healthy web needs more than one engine, and Firefox/Mullvad/Tor being on Gecko is part of why some privacy-minded people favor them — not because Chromium is insecure, but because a single-engine web hands too much control to one company.

Brave: the best private browser for most people

Brave’s pitch is the one most people actually want: install it, and tracker and ad blocking are simply on, no configuration, no extensions to vet. Because it’s built on Chromium, it renders the web exactly like Chrome does, so nothing breaks and the muscle memory transfers — the settings menus, the extension store, the keyboard shortcuts are all familiar. For the very common goal of “stop advertisers following me around without me having to become a hobbyist,” Brave is the path of least resistance.

Who it’s for: anyone leaving Chrome who wants a real privacy upgrade with essentially no learning curve, on desktop and mobile alike.

The honest drawbacks. Brave sits on the same Chromium engine as Chrome, so if part of your reason for leaving is to reduce one company’s grip on the web, Brave doesn’t fully answer that. Brave also has its own money-making layers — an optional rewards/ads system you can decline, its own search engine, and past ventures into crypto features — that some people find cluttered or philosophically off-putting. None of it is forced on you, but “I just want a clean private browser” folks sometimes bounce off the extras. Turn the rewards system off during setup and it’s a quiet, fast, private browser.

Firefox: the best independent, non-Chromium choice

Firefox is the browser for people who care about who controls the web, not just about blocking trackers. It runs on its own Gecko engine, it’s open-source, and it’s maintained by a non-profit-backed organization rather than an ad company. Out of the box its privacy is good; with a couple of changes it’s very good — enable the stricter tracking-protection setting, and consider a reputable content blocker.

Firefox is also the most flexible of the four. If you like tuning things — container tabs that wall off your logged-in accounts from each other, a curated set of privacy extensions, granular control over what’s allowed — Firefox rewards that better than any browser here.

Who it’s for: people who want an open, non-Chromium browser and don’t mind flipping a setting or two; anyone who values engine diversity on principle.

The honest drawbacks. The strongest privacy requires you to change some defaults and know which extensions to trust — it’s not as turnkey as Brave. And a heavily customized Firefox can, ironically, make you more fingerprintable, because an unusual configuration stands out. If fingerprinting resistance is your priority, don’t hand-roll a hardened Firefox — use Mullvad Browser, which is built for exactly that and shares Firefox’s engine.

Mullvad Browser: anti-fingerprinting without the Tor slowdown

This is the pick most people have never heard of, and it fills a real gap. Mullvad Browser was built by the VPN company Mullvad in collaboration with the Tor Project, and it borrows Tor Browser’s serious anti-fingerprinting engineering — the goal being that every user looks as similar as possible, so you blend into the crowd instead of standing out. The difference from Tor is that it does not route you through the Tor network, so you get that fingerprinting resistance at normal internet speed. It’s designed to be used on its own or alongside a VPN.

Who it’s for: people who want strong anti-tracking and anti-fingerprinting for daily browsing, without accepting Tor’s slowdown; a natural companion to a VPN.

The honest drawbacks. By design it strips away conveniences — it discourages staying logged in, doesn’t sync across your devices the way a mainstream browser does, and generally trades comfort for uniformity. That’s the point, but it makes Mullvad Browser a deliberate tool rather than a set-and-forget default. Many people run it alongside a more convenient browser for everyday, logged-in life.

Tor Browser: real anonymity, and only when you need it

The Tor Browser is the serious tool, and it’s important to be precise about what it does. It routes your traffic through several volunteer-run relays around the world, so the sites you visit don’t learn your real location or IP address, and anyone watching your local network sees only that you’re using Tor, not what you’re doing. Combined with the same anti-fingerprinting work Mullvad Browser uses, it’s the closest thing to genuine anonymity a browser offers.

Who it’s for: journalists, researchers, people under surveillance or censorship, and anyone with a real, specific need to browse without being identified or located.

The honest drawbacks. It’s slow — the multiple relays are the whole point, and they cost you speed. Some websites treat Tor traffic with suspicion (extra CAPTCHAs, occasional blocks). And crucially, Tor’s anonymity is easy to defeat by accident: log into your real email or a social account and you’ve told that site exactly who you are, Tor or not. It’s a specialist instrument, not an everyday browser, and using it for casual browsing mostly buys you friction you don’t need.

What a private browser won’t do

The category is oversold, so it’s worth naming the boundaries plainly:

  • It won’t make you anonymous while you’re logged in. The moment you sign into an account, that service knows it’s you. No browser changes that.
  • It won’t fix weak or reused passwords — still how people actually get compromised. The highest-value hour you can spend on security is locking down your accounts, not switching browsers.

  • Incognito mode won’t do most of this either. It hides history from the next person at your keyboard. That’s the whole feature.

How to choose

  • Match the browser to your threat model. Everyday tracking → Brave or Firefox. Fingerprinting → Mullvad Browser. Anonymity → Tor. Don’t run Tor for tasks Brave handles fine, and don’t expect Brave to do Tor’s job.
  • Turnkey vs. tinkerer. Want it to just work? Brave. Enjoy configuring and value an independent engine? Firefox.
  • Don’t over-customize if fingerprinting is your worry. A unique setup makes you more identifiable. For anti-fingerprinting, use a browser built for it (Mullvad or Tor) rather than a bespoke Firefox.
  • Keep it updated. Whichever you choose, an out-of-date browser is the bigger risk. Automatic updates on, always.
  • Layer it. A private browser plus a password manager, two-factor authentication, and — if your situation calls for it — a VPN is the actual “private setup.” One browser alone isn’t.
  • Be honest about incognito. Use it for shared computers; don’t mistake it for privacy from anyone else.

The bottom line

Most people should use Brave (privacy with no setup) or a hardened Firefox (open, independent engine). Reach for Mullvad Browser when you want serious anti-fingerprinting at normal speed, and the Tor Browser only when you genuinely need anonymity.
